California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). James D. Phelan was a businessman, civic leader, political figure, and philanthropist, of San Francisco, Calif. He served as mayor of San Francisco (1897-1901) and U.S. Senator from Calif.
